Focus.de: „It was time for something new“

Bill Kaulitz: „It was time for something new“
The video for “Love who loves you back” caused a a lot of stir. Bill, many people wanted to know if you’re bisexual. You spoke out in favor of love independent of gender. Why do people nowadays still need a label for this?
Bill Kaulitz: That’s a good question which I also ask myself. I don’t understand it. My message is: Let’s not entitle and always make such a big topic out of it. Everyone can love who they want to love – without shouting it from the rooftops. We can’t decide it ourselves anyway. Love is decided by our heart. Everyone will realize that somewhen.

You also can’t predict that…
Kaulitz: Exactly. Who knows, maybe I go out of my hotel room and meet the love of my life. Such encounters can also change everything. Because of that I also find it difficult to link it to the gender or religion or to limit it in any way.

Do people think too narrow-minded, too black & white?
Schäfer: Definitely.

Krone.at: “We can’t please everyone”

Tokio Hotel: “We can’t please everyone”
For five years they were like fallen off the face of the earth. Due to the hype about their private life the four german mega-sellers took the bull by the horns and moved to Los Angeles. After a long time of finding themselves the passion for making music came up again. “Kings of Suburbia”, the long-awaited comeback-album, distanced itself from the former works of the quartet and penetrates the charts as a trendy electro-record. In the “Krone”-Interview the singer Bill Kaulitz talks about the private and soundwise changes and why the band takes matters into their own hands now.

Krone: Bill, after years of hiatus, the concerns that you can’t live up on former successes were surely big. How big is the gratification now that the album has reached #1 of the iTunes-charts in 27 countries?
Bill Kaulitz: We have actually been very relaxed from the beginning, because we believed in us and our songs. We ourselves made the biggest pressure for us. Of course the success is great though and we’re also surprised by this positive feedback and that’s actually the most beautiful thing.

Krone: But not all of your fans are entirely enthusiastic – some older ones, who have always been listening to Tokio Hotel, are downright confused because of the style change to electric music. Why actually this change?
Kaulitz: The only demand for us was that we ourselves really like the album. We didn’t consciously change, but we wrote and produced. The result is the music that felt good to us. We also didn’t want to make compromises, but just go ahead with what was best for us. It’s clear that not everyone likes it, and that’s completely normal.

Fastforward-Magazin.de: Interview with Tokio Hotel

Interview with Tokio Hotel
The unofficial fifth band member of Tokio Hotel immediately welcomes me stormily by literally almost scoffing my right hand out of enthusiasm. Okay, usually I’m rarely within touching distance with my interview partners but for Pumba I make an exception of course. Accordingly disappointed Bill Kaulitz’ bulldog is then, as he’s not allowed to take part in the talk, because he is supposed to be walked around the house by a young woman in the meantime. Only reluctant he leaves the suite in the Ritz Carlton, there Bill and Tom Kaulitz, Georg Listing, Gustav Schäfer and I have made ourselves comfortable on the sofas by now. “He doesn’t like to go with others, usually he mostly runs after me.”, Bill tells me and sceptically watches for another moment how his little friend wiggles away with sagging ears. But the other band members’ good mood is unabated. Red Bull cans are opened fizzily, to fight the slight upcoming of tiredness. (Tom to Georg: “You won’t pour that into a glass now, or?” Georg: “Yes, I’ll drink a nice little glass now. Cheers!”) Now, after some quiet years, things are happening turbulently again in the Tokio Hotel. All the more I’m happy about it that they’re taking time to talk with me. Preferably when talking about what a band likes doing best – music!

In the last weeks I attentively observed what was going on on your Facebook profile. First there was a big outcry of course, when one could finally listen to the new songs, that your sound has changed so much. I’d be interested if you also think that this change is so extreme? And was it a slow process, or a conscious decision to do it this way?
Tom: It was rather less conscious, but of course we see that this is completely different from what we had done before. When you compare this album with our second one for example, the leap is even bigger of course. With “Humanoid” we already sounded the bell a bit [for the change], at that time we experimented with synthesizers and programmings. We just continued that now. For us it’s a process and development that was taking place over a long period of time.

Bill: After the last album it couldn’t go on for us that way. I didn’t have inspiration at all, we didn’t know which kind of music we wanted to make. Of course we could have screwed together another album like that. But we also were on tour for such a long time, and we first had to get new inspiration. Being authentic or staying true to yourself means to me going along with your development and not only delivering what your fans want to hear from you. I wanted to make a record which I would also listen to at home.

Apelzin.ru: “We are continuing to grow as a band”

Tokio Hotel: “We are continuing to grow as a band”
Tokio Hotel is back to music scene with their brand new album “Kings Of Suburbia”. And despite being busy, the guys found the time to talk with “Apelzin.ru” about the modern music industry, favourite artists and as well told us why it took so long to record the new album “Kings Of Suburbia”.

— Now you are on a European promo tour. Will you come to Russia?
We would like to come to Russia. I think in the near future (like next couple of days) that’s not going to happen. But we would like to come and tour. We are definitely going to come and play live and see our Russian fans for sure.

— So Russian fans will see you at your world tour in 2015?
Oh, yes!

— Your last tour “Welcome To Humanoid City” had multiple designs on the stage. What about future concerts? Will you prepare something special?
Yeah, always. I think that people can always expect that we will create a show. So we are not just playing instruments, we are always creating a show. It’s a great experience for everyone and then they can remember. So we will definitely put on something great. We have just started with our creative concepts and ideas. We are going to make a great show. It will be hard to top the last one because it was a great tour but we differently will plan something.
